Blocked Gutters: Causes, Signs & Solutions

Why blocked gutters are more serious than most homeowners realise — and exactly what to do about them.

Blocked gutters are one of the most common — and most overlooked — causes of serious home damage. What starts as a minor blockage can lead to damp walls, rotting fascias, flooded basements and even subsidence if left unattended. This guide covers everything Warwickshire homeowners need to know.

Why Are Gutters So Important?

Your guttering system does one critical job: carry rainwater away from your home safely. When it fails, water has nowhere to go except:

  • Over the top of the gutter (overflowing), soaking the wall behind
  • Behind the fascia boards, causing rot
  • Into the ground immediately next to your foundations
  • Back up under the roof tiles near the eaves

Even in a moderately wet Warwickshire year, your gutters will carry thousands of litres of water off your roof. A blocked system puts all of that somewhere it shouldn't go.

What Causes Gutters to Block?

Leaves and Debris

The most common cause, especially in autumn. Warwickshire has no shortage of trees, and fallen leaves collect in gutters rapidly. Once leaves compact and combine with moisture, they create a dense plug that blocks water flow entirely.

Moss and Algae from the Roof

As moss and algae break down on roof tiles, they wash into the gutters and compact into a thick sludge. This is particularly common on north-facing roofs that don't get enough sunlight to naturally suppress growth.

Bird Nests

Birds — particularly sparrows and starlings — frequently nest in gutters and downpipes in spring. A nest can completely block a downpipe, causing water to back up and overflow.

Broken or Displaced Tiles

Broken tile fragments can fall into gutters and create partial blockages. Over time, these catch other debris and grow into complete blockages.

Sagging Gutters

Gutters that sag or pull away from the fascia lose their gradient. Water pools in the low points rather than flowing to the downpipe. This can look like a blockage but is actually a structural issue with the guttering itself.

Warning Signs of Blocked Gutters

During or After Rain

  • Water pouring or cascading over the sides of gutters
  • No water coming from the downpipe outlet at ground level
  • Water dripping or running down the wall between downpipe joints

On Dry Days

  • Plants or weeds growing from the gutters (a sign of long-standing blockage and soil build-up)
  • Staining on the wall beneath the gutters (tide marks from repeated overflow)
  • Gutters visibly sagging, pulling away or full of visible debris
  • Damp patches inside the house on upper-floor walls or ceilings near the eaves
  • Rotting or discoloured fascia boards

The Damage Blocked Gutters Can Cause

Homeowners sometimes put off gutter maintenance because it doesn't seem urgent. Here's why that's a false economy:

Damp and Mould

Water running down the external wall eventually penetrates the masonry. Internal damp and black mould follow. Treatment and redecoration costs can easily run into hundreds of pounds — far more than a gutter clean.

Rotting Fascias and Soffits

When gutters overflow at the back edge, water sits in contact with the fascia boards. Timber fascias rot quickly; uPVC fascias can split or pull away. Replacing a run of fascias costs £500–£1,500+ depending on length. See our fascias and soffits service.

Foundation Damage

Water pooling directly next to the house can soften clay soils and in extreme cases contribute to subsidence. This is particularly relevant in parts of Warwickshire with clay-heavy soils.

Roof Damage

A completely blocked gutter can cause water to back up under the tiles at the eaves, soaking the roof deck and leading to rot in the timbers just inside the roof.

How to Prevent Blocked Gutters

Clean Gutters Twice a Year

The most important preventative measure. Clean in late autumn after the majority of leaves have fallen, and again in late spring to clear any debris that has accumulated over winter. For properties surrounded by trees, quarterly cleaning may be necessary.

Install Gutter Guards

Mesh or foam gutter guards sit inside the gutter and allow water through while blocking leaves and debris. They're not perfect — fine debris can still get through — but they significantly reduce the frequency of manual cleaning required.

Check Downpipe Outlets

The junction between the guttering and the downpipe is where blockages most commonly form. Ensure this area is clear and that downpipes are flowing freely all the way to the drain at ground level.

Address Moss on the Roof

If your roof has significant moss growth, treating it will reduce the volume of debris washing into your gutters. Our roof coating service includes professional moss treatment.

Can I Clean My Own Gutters?

For a single-storey property, gutters may be accessible from a step ladder — but always work with another person for safety. For two-storey properties or above, we strongly recommend using a professional. Falls from ladders are one of the most common causes of serious DIY injuries.

Professional gutter cleaning typically costs £60–£150 for a standard semi-detached or detached house — excellent value when you consider the damage prevention it provides.

When to Replace Rather Than Repair

Gutters don't last forever. uPVC guttering typically lasts 20–30 years before it becomes brittle, cracks or pulls away from joints. Signs that replacement rather than just cleaning is needed:

  • Persistent leaking joints that recur despite resealing
  • Gutters that no longer sit level due to bracket failure
  • Cracked or broken sections
  • Guttering that has separated from the fascia
  • Old cast iron guttering with extensive rust

A full guttering replacement for a three-bed semi typically costs £400–£800 with uPVC, and includes new brackets, downpipes and outlets.
